2025 Kern County Fair Employee Application |Competitive Exhibits Coordinator

Position Type: Part-Time, Seasonal (February–October)

About the Position

The Kern County Fair is seeking a motivated, organized, and enthusiastic individual to serve as the Competitive Exhibits Coordinator. This role is essential in planning and managing the annual Competitive Exhibits program, which showcases community entries ranging from fine arts and crafts to agricultural displays.

The ideal candidate is a team player with strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines while working with volunteers, department chairmen, and Fair staff.


Key Responsibilities

  • Planning & Administration
    • Oversee Competitive Exhibits operations and timelines from February through October
    • Work with department chairmen to review entry categories and update the catalog
    • Manage department budgets, supply ordering, and recordkeeping
    • Maintain and organize exhibit files, records, and supplies
  • Catalog & Entries
    • Coordinate annual updates to the entry guidebook (catalog)
    • Set and update intake, judging, and pick-up schedules
    • Input and process entries; oversee online entry management system
  • Volunteer & Judge Coordination
    • Communicate with and support department chairmen, sitters, clerks, and judges
    • Organize training, t-shirt orders, lunch counts, and judging schedules
    • Create and distribute scorecards, judging books, and signage
  • Onsite Fair Operations
    • Oversee intake and judging days
    • Ensure ribbon and award preparation is completed and distributed
    • Coordinate daily logistics during the Fair, including volunteer management
    • Manage pick-up day, lost and unclaimed entries, and award disbursement
  • Post-Fair Wrap-Up
    • Organize and store supplies and unclaimed items
    • Contact winners and exhibitors for check and entry pickup
    • Assist with cleanup and reporting

Qualifications

  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience coordinating events, working with volunteers, or managing timelines is a plus
  • Familiarity with computers and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to lift boxes and work extended hours during Fair season (September)
  • Enthusiasm for community events and the mission of the Kern County Fair

Schedule & Compensation

  • Part-time seasonal position (February – October)
  • Hours vary throughout the year, with full availability required during Fair time in September
  • Compensation based on experience

As an applicant for employment with the Kern County Fair, I understand the following:

2. I understand that the business needs of the Kern County Fair may, at times, require me to work excess hours, shift work, a rotating schedule other than Monday through Friday. Social Security will not be withheld from my wages; however, Medicare will be deducted. All employees not eligible for Public Employees Retirement System will automatically be enrolled in the State’s PST Plan (Part-time, Seasonal, Temporary retirement Plan.)

3. I understand that the Department of Food & Agriculture will not allow the Kern County Fair to employ a part-time, seasonal, or temporary employee more than 125 working days per calendar year or 1,000 hours per fiscal year and that employment with the Fair does not guarantee future, permanent or civil service status.

4. I further understand that the signing of this application does not constitute an offer of employment by the Kern County Fair. In the event of employment, I understand that I am required to abide by all rules and regulations of the company. I understand that I will be required to furnish documents that establish my identity and eligibility to work in the United States, in compliance with the Immigration and Reform Act of 1986.
